Step 1: Attend a Mister Lemur assembly.
Step 2: Get inspired!
(Inspiration can strike at any time. That’s why it’s great to carry around a notebook and a pen! Here are a few questions to get you started: What sparks your curiosity? Did something funny happen to you today? Can you imagine a new way to describe everyday objects? What do you want to do when you grow up?)
Step 3: Write a one page story. You can even work as a team (Mister Lemur does!)
- If you’re writing a Mister Lemur-style, rhyming poem, click here.

Step 4: Edit!
Step 5: Create your final entry. Don’t forget to include a great illustration and write clearly so that others can read your poem.
Step 6: Turn your entry in to your teacher or librarian. Make sure to include your name, grade, and teacher’s name on the BACK of your entry.
Rules:
- All Mister Lemur entries should be one page, front only, and letter size (8.5″ x 11″) or smaller.
- Include your name, grade, and teacher’s name on the BACK of your entry.
- Even though we love to see your creativity, please do not use glitter, glue, or staples. Unfortunately, those extras get stuck in our scanner.
- Although we encourage you to get inspiration from great writers, please do not directly copy another person’s work. If you are using another poem, song, or story as inspiration, give them a little credit. (Ex: “This poem was inspired by Diary of a Wimpy Kid”)
- Have fun!
Entry Timeline:
- The contest is announced at your Mister Lemur assembly.
- Students have about a week to create their entries.
- Entries are turned in to teachers, librarians, or reading specialist(s) who send all the entries to us on one box.
- It takes a few days for the box to arrive at Lemur Headquarters in San Francisco.
- Once we receive the entries, we scan them and put them on the website. At this point we add the school to the list of schools on the website. (Until then, there are no entries to view!)
- We then announce that voting is open, and people usually have a week to 10 days to vote.
- When voting closes we tally the winners, then we send certificates and prizes to the school.
- It takes a few days for the prizes to arrive at school.
- The school receives the prizes and distributes them.
- The contest ends.
