What Kind of Writer Are You?
This album of writing songs, written by Jonny Williams and performed by Jonny Williams, Dave Haberman, and Doug Allen, and produced by Doug Allen, was written for Adventures in Writing Camp’s 2015 sessions.

1) What Kind of Writer Are You? This song explores different genres, helping young writers understand the many types of writing available for them to explore.

2) Beginning Middle End: (Climbing a Mountain). Uses the “Story Mountain” concept to teach the importance of crafting a story with a “story arc,” or clear beginning, middle, and end.

3) Judge a Book by its Cover: This song turns the adage “don’t judge a book by its cover” on its head, reminding campers of the importance of presenting their work in a clear, clean, and attractive manner. (“I’m looking for a book at the library, never know what’s going to catch my eye to read. If it doesn’t look nice, then I might not see, I might walk past a future Newberry.”)

4) Said is Dead: A eulogy for boring words! This mock funeral dirge for the overused word “said” reminds students to bury boring words and provides many examples of alternative, “better” words to bring writing to life.

5) POW! (Pick, Organize, Write): A song about generating and organizing ideas. Brainstorm, pick a topic, organize your ideas using an outline or story map, then start writing!

6) Write a Summary: (Choose 5! Someone, wanted, but, so then) This song teaches a five finger, five step process for writing a summary. SOMEONE (your character) WANTED (to do something) BUT (the drama or conflict in the story), SO (she overcame the drama or conflict), THEN (she was successful!)!
